How to Use Printable Journal Kits: A Beginner-Friendly Guide

You found an adorable printable journal kit.
You downloaded it.
You opened the folder and discovered pages, stickers, pockets, tags, cards and all kinds of cute little pieces.
And now you're thinking:
Okay...what am I supposed to do with all of this?
That's the fun part.
There really isn't one "right" way to use a printable journal kit.
You can print the whole thing, choose only your favorite pages, add the pieces to a journal you already own or create an entirely new journal around the kit.
If you're wondering how to use printable journal kits, I'll walk you through what might be included, how to print everything and lots of different ways you can actually use those pieces.
Let's make something.
What Is a Printable Journal Kit?
A printable journal kit is a collection of coordinated digital pages and creative elements that you download and print at home.
Instead of starting with a completely blank journal, you have a collection of pieces designed around a particular theme, style or purpose.
A printable journal kit might be based around:
Books.
Gardening.
Plants.
Travel.
Self-care.
Goals.
Holidays.
Memories.
Motherhood.
Crafting.
Baking.
Seasonal themes.
Or simply a color palette and aesthetic you love.
Some journal kits are primarily decorative.
Others include functional pages, trackers, prompts and planning tools.
And some combine both.
Those are especially fun because your journal can be cute and useful.
What Comes in a Printable Journal Kit?
Every kit is different, but you might receive things like:
-
Full-size journal pages
-
Printable stickers
-
Decorative papers
-
Journaling cards
-
Bookmarks
-
Tags
-
Pockets
-
Planner tabs
-
Labels
-
Affirmation cards
-
Mini notes
-
Quotes
-
Journal prompts
-
Trackers
-
Checklists
-
Decorative embellishments
-
Print and Cut pieces
Some kits may also include PNG or SVG files for pieces you can use with a Cricut or another compatible cutting machine.
Always check the product description and included instructions so you know exactly what's inside your particular kit.
Do You Need a Cricut to Use Printable Journal Kits?
No!
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about printable crafting.
You absolutely do not need a Cricut to enjoy printable journal kits.
You can print your pages and cut individual pieces with scissors or a paper trimmer.
A Cricut can make cutting certain elements faster and easier, especially when you're working with detailed Print Then Cut pieces.
But it isn't required unless the particular project says otherwise.
So if you have:
A printer.
Paper.
Scissors.
Glue or adhesive.
You're already ready to start.
Step 1: Look Through Your Printable Journal Kit
Before printing everything, look through your files.
See what's included.
You may realize you don't need every single page for the project you're creating.
Maybe you love the stickers, pockets and journal cards but don't need all of the included pages.
That's okay.
One of the best things about digital printables is that you can choose what you want to use.
Print the entire kit.
Or print three pieces.
It's your journal.
Step 2: Decide What Kind of Journal You Want to Make
Before you start printing, think about how you'll use the kit.
Are you:
Creating a brand-new journal?
Decorating an existing planner?
Making a reading journal?
Documenting a trip?
Creating a memory book?
Building a self-care journal?
Making a seasonal journal?
Adding pages to a binder?
Creating a scrapbook-style journal?
Your answer can help you decide which pages and pieces you actually need.
Step 3: Choose Your Paper
You don't have to print every part of a journal kit on the same paper.
In fact, mixing paper types can make your finished project more interesting.
Regular Printer Paper
Good for test prints and some everyday journal pages.
Heavier Paper
Great for journal cards, bookmarks, tags, dashboards and pieces that need a little more structure.
Printable Sticker Paper
Perfect for sticker elements.
Decorative or Specialty Paper
Depending on your printer and project, you may experiment with different printable papers for specific effects.
Always make sure the material you're using is compatible with your printer.
Step 4: Do a Test Print
If you're using a new printable kit or unfamiliar printer settings, print one page first.
Check:
Is the size correct?
Are the colors what you expected?
Is anything getting cut off?
Does the page orientation look right?
Are your printer settings scaling the design unexpectedly?
A quick test can save paper, ink and frustration.
Step 5: Print Your Journal Pages
Once you're happy with your test, print the journal pages you want to use.
You can create an entire journal using the included printable pages or mix them with pages you already have.
For example, you could combine:
A printable reading tracker.
Blank lined paper.
A themed journal page.
A book review page.
Decorative paper.
A monthly reading challenge.
There's no rule saying every page has to match perfectly.
The imperfections and combinations are part of what make handmade journals fun.
Step 6: Print Your Stickers
If your printable journal kit includes stickers, you have a few options.
You can print them on sticker paper and cut them by hand.
Or, if the appropriate files are included, you may be able to use Cricut Print Then Cut.
With Print Then Cut:
Your printer prints the colorful sticker artwork.
Your Cricut scans the printed sheet.
Your Cricut cuts around the stickers.
Then you peel and stick.
Easy.
Step 7: Cut Out the Journal Pieces
Now start cutting out your smaller elements.
This might include:
Tags.
Bookmarks.
Cards.
Tabs.
Labels.
Pockets.
Decorative pieces.
Quotes.
Affirmations.
You can use scissors for simple shapes or a paper trimmer for straight edges.
If your kit includes compatible Print Then Cut files, you may also be able to let your Cricut do some of the work.
Step 8: Make Printable Journal Pockets
Pockets are one of my favorite journal-kit extras.
They're cute and useful.
Depending on how the pocket is designed, you'll typically print it, cut around the shape, fold along the indicated areas and attach the appropriate edges to your journal page.
Then you have a little space to hold things.
Use printable pockets for:
Mini notes.
Photos.
Receipts.
Affirmation cards.
Tags.
Journal prompts.
Tickets.
Memories.
Stickers.
Or tiny pieces you don't want to lose.
Step 9: Add Journaling Cards
Journaling cards can be decorative, functional or both.
You can write:
A favorite memory.
Something funny that happened.
A quote.
Your current mood.
A goal.
A gratitude note.
A book review.
A little story.
Something you don't want to forget.
Then tuck the card into a pocket, attach it directly to a page or leave it loose inside your journal.
Step 10: Use Printable Tags
Tags don't have to be for gifts.
They're adorable inside journals.
Add a ribbon or piece of string.
Write a little note on the back.
Use one as a page marker.
Tuck it into a pocket.
Attach it to a page.
Use it to record a date or memory.
Sometimes the smallest pieces end up becoming your favorites.
Step 11: Add Planner Tabs
If your printable journal kit includes tabs, use them to organize sections.
For example, a reading journal might have tabs for:
TBR.
Books Read.
Favorites.
Reviews.
Quotes.
Challenges.
A self-care journal might have:
Goals.
Habits.
Joy.
Rest.
Routines.
Reflections.
Tabs can make a handmade journal feel much more finished and functional.
Step 12: Use the Bookmarks
Printable bookmarks are another piece you don't have to keep inside a traditional book.
Use them as:
Page markers.
Journal decorations.
Writing prompts.
Mini dashboards.
Decorative inserts.
Or yes...actual bookmarks.
Print them on heavier paper if you want them to feel more substantial.
Step 13: Layer Your Printable Pieces
This is where your journal starts feeling handmade.
You don't have to place everything perfectly in a row.
Try layering pieces.
A decorative paper background.
A journal card.
A sticker.
A tiny label.
Maybe a little tag tucked behind it.
You can combine several simple printable pieces to create a page that looks completely different from the original kit.
Step 14: Add Things From Your Real Life
This is one of the best ways to make a printable journal feel personal.
Mix the printable pieces with things you've collected.
Try adding:
Photos.
Ticket stubs.
Receipts from a special day.
Postcards.
Notes.
Pressed flowers.
Packaging.
Kids' drawings.
Handwritten lists.
Little memories.
A printable kit gives you the framework.
Your life makes it yours.

Can You Reprint Printable Journal Kits?
One of the biggest benefits of digital printables is being able to print what you need when you need it.
However, your ability to reprint or reuse a purchased kit depends on the license and terms included by the seller.
Always check the product's usage terms.
For personal-use printables, that generally means the files are for your own personal projects rather than for redistributing, sharing or reselling the digital files.
What If I Don't Have a Fancy Printer?
You don't necessarily need one.
Start with the printer you already have.
Try a test page and see how it looks.
Printer quality, paper choice, ink and settings can all affect the final result.
If you're creating something for yourself, don't get stuck trying to make every page look professionally manufactured.
It's supposed to be fun.
What If I Don't Have a Cricut?
Grab your scissors.
Seriously.
You can make an adorable printable journal without a cutting machine.
Print Then Cut is fantastic for detailed stickers and pieces, but plenty of journal-kit elements can be cut by hand.
A paper trimmer can also make straight cuts much quicker.
What Adhesive Should I Use?
It depends on the piece and your journal.
You might use:
Glue sticks.
Tape runners.
Double-sided tape.
Sticker paper.
Other paper-crafting adhesives.
For pockets, heavier embellishments or specialty materials, choose an adhesive appropriate for the paper and project you're making.
Printable Journal Kits Don't Have to Be Perfect
This might be my favorite part.
A handmade journal isn't supposed to look like something that rolled off a factory line.
Your sticker can be a tiny bit crooked.
Your handwriting doesn't have to look like a font.
Your layers don't have to be perfectly symmetrical.
Your journal can be messy.
Colorful.
Minimal.
Over-the-top.
Organized.
Completely random.
It's yours.
Start With One Page
If you've downloaded a beautiful journal kit and feel overwhelmed by all the pieces, don't try to create the entire journal in one afternoon.
Pick one page.
Choose a background.
Add a journaling card.
Stick on a cute embellishment.
Write something.
Done.
Tomorrow, make another page.
Eventually, those individual pages become something completely yours.
And that's what makes printable journal kits so much fun.
Someone gives you the pieces.
You turn them into something meaningful.
At Maker Beautiful, we create printables to help you make, organize, celebrate and enjoy the things that matter to you.
So print the pages.
Cut the cute little pieces.
Stick them somewhere.
Write something you want to remember.
And make it beautiful.
Print • Cut • Create • Be Happy.
